Facebook made me think today…

31 08 2008

So I was dancing around Facebook today, looking at applications and friends and settings and something I had never noticed before, PRIVACY SETTINGS!! So I decided to cure my curiosity and check out what these settings might be. Much to my surprise, they allow you to change who can see your profile, what they can see, AND most importantly and most God-like, who you can block.

Blocking is quite possibly the coolest feature of anything, ever. So I looked around and thought of people I don’t like and no longer wished to speak to,  I typed in their name, and then blocked them from contact through Facebook. It was kind of funny though because at the bottom of the screen there was fine print warning that blocking people from Facebook was only limited to just Facebook and that it did not cover the entire internet.

This act made me ponder life though. Why can’t we just block people from our actual lives. We can try to, by ignoring calls and text messages, emails and instant messages, but that never actually solves anything. We can then of course just come out and say that we no longer wish to be acquaintances and would like it if we could just go our seperate ways, but that’s hard to do because it seems rude, even though blatantly ignoring someone is pretty rude too.

It’s just, breaking things off is one of the hardest things to do, especially when they are someone who used to be really important in your life. But sometimes, these things have to be done. No one can stop it…because deep down, no one wants to.

But I wanted to. So I did it.
