The Soundtrack of Life: Scrubs
February 18th, 2009 § Leave a Comment
So, upon watching Scrubs nightly at 8pm on Comedy Central, I’ve discovered that Zach Braff and the writers of the show have an excellent choice of music. There is rarely a night where the ending music isn’t superb in quality.
Earlier this week, it was the “New Slang” by the Shins. Excellent. The song was so excellent that I went right on to iTunes[which is now the bane of my existence] and I bought the song.
Last week it was “Dreaming of You” by The Coral. Gahhh, this song is remarkably fantastic.
Anyways, the main point I want to make in this post is that there is always a way to find legitimately good music in odd places. Take Scrubs, like I said, as an example.
Each episode [usually] ends with a pretty good song. So all you have to do is listen at the end, find the name of the episode…and search!
Happy Listening.

Blink 182 is back, tell a friend.
Blink 182 announced on stage at the 51st Grammy Awards [the first time the band had been on stage together in years] that Blink 182 was coming back, and a new album was in the works. I’m still not sure if I’m excited yet or not…maybe after I hear their first new single or something.

New Blink 182 Logo.
If you go to their website www.blink182.com, the band has a not for fans under the “Our Message” tab. It basically just says that their new album is being recorded right now and something is happening in Summer 2009 [Hooray vagueness!] .
They also have a new logo with an additional sixth arrow [one for each album?? hmmm??].
Well, wait til Summer to see if this is actually a positive thing for music or not…I’m skeptical.

Apple has effectively made it possible to never leave your house to buy music/television/food[I'm sure they're working on it] with the iTunes Store.
Music is seen as a way for people to come together and feel things together, that’s why there are still concert venues and music stores and nation/world-wide concert tours [like the Vans Warped Tour or anytime U2 releases a new album].

Apple must be flushed...
Well, I recently have been searching the iTunes store and have found that buying music on there is about as addicting as buying lottery tickets or playing BlackJack in Vegas. It’s easy to start buying a CD and then realize that you now want another CD, thanks to the wonders of the “Genius” system. The Genius system [was developed by a marketing genius that's for sure] tells you what music you might like, based on music you have already shown that you already like. You know what’s crazy though, 9 times out of 10, it’s absolutely right.
Example: Genius sees that you own Rotation by Cute is What We Aim For, Genius suggests “Hey There Delilah” by Plain White Tee’s.
Wow! I love how a computer program can make an educated guess and completely take out the need to listen through hundreds of songs before I find one iLike.
Apple, in it’s attempt to make things easier, it has only made us lazier. Pretty soon, Apple is going to be doing our breathing for us, but when we breathe, music is going to come out of our lungs.

So I was listening to 96x today and during commercials, there was an advertisement for the band Mae and their upcoming album release.
Mae is a Norfolk, VA based indie-rock band that was formed in 2001. They released their first album, Destination, Beautiful in 2003 with Tooth and Nail Records. The album’s first single “Embers and Envelopes” reached an audience of a relatively small area. People outside the Tidewater area weren’t familiar with Mae’s style of music, but all that would change by the time their second album, The Everglow, was released in 2005.

The Everglow.
Mae toured heavily to promote their second album and also to spread the word about themselves.
The band signed with Capitol Records in 2006 for the recording of their third studio album, Singularity, which was released in August of 2007.
This brings me to the main point of this post. After the better part of a decade full of success, Mae has decided to break away from Capitol Records for the release of their fourth album. Now, this sounds like a bad idea only because now they have less potential to make massive amounts of cash [theoretically].
Their fourth studio album is being relased one song at a time on their website whatismae.com. Each month, they will release one new track [12 months = 12 songs] for a minimum donation of $1 a piece. These donations will go towards various humanitarian aid groups and charity organizations of Mae’s chosing. As of today [02.07.09], Mae has released one track and raised close to $9,000 for the Habitat for Humanity Foundation.
The song, “The House That Fire Built”, is pretty good, and it’s well worth a minimum of $1 especially if it’s going to aid a charity. I bought the song, and it’s been a great addition to my iTunes collection.
According to Mae’s website, three EPs will be released [M]orning, [A]fternoon, and [E]vening once more tracks are released.
I think more bands should take a note from Mae and do things like this. Bono and U2 obviously do this, but it’s nice to see someone local doing something like this.
Go to whatismae.com to donate and download.
